Insomnia in Toddlers: Sign and Symptoms

Did you know that insomnia can happen in toddlers too? Yes, it can affect toddlers also.
Like adults, children with Insomnia in Toddlers either have difficulty sleeping and wake up often in the middle of the night.

WHAT IS INSOMNIA?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to sleep or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. When you wake up, you may still feel tired. Insomnia can drain not only kids’ strength and mood but also their health, work performance, and quality of life.

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO KIDS NEED?

Babies, children, and teenagers require substantially more sleep than adults to sustain their rapid mental and physical development.

When children pass from the baby stage to the toddler stage, and then to high school and early middle school years, their sleep tends to slip a little.

WHAT CAUSES INSOMNIA IN CHILDREN?

Many times insomnia is a symptom that is caused by something else. Possible causes of insomnia can include:

SLEEP DISORDER

Sleep disorders are normal in children and adolescents; even babies may have sleep disorders. A nap-free day spent playing will leave your child too much wired to sleep.

ANXIETY OR STRESS

Yeah, they’re young, but children are also under stress sometimes. Ask them how the school is going and how it’s going with their peers. Are they being bullied by someone? Make some improvements to their living conditions as well.

CAFFEINE, FOUND IN MANY TYPES OF SODA AND ENERGY DRINKS

Most sodas and energy drinks contain caffeine, so restrict your child’s intake at lunchtime. Better still, aim to leave out as many of these styles of drinks as possible.

SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICATIONS

Many medications, such as those used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and antidepressants, can also cause insomnia.

MAKE SURE THE ROOM IS COMFORTABLE

Is your kid’s room is quiet? Unless the child is afraid of darkness, a low-level night light is suitable. Most of the people sleep best in a slightly cool room. Be sure your child’s bed is not filled with toys, because it can be distracting at bedtime. One or two is all right.

CREATE A GOOD BEDTIME ROUTINE FOR YOUR KID

A positive bedtime routine helps your child develop good sleep habits now and for the future.

PROMOTE NATURAL LIGHT EXPOSURE

First thing in the morning, opening a window allows natural sunlight directly to bed and help your little one to wake up and signifies the day.

SET A BEDWETTING ALARM

Bedwetting is also one of the reasons that your child feels uncomfortable while sleeping. Ask your child Doctor about a bedwetting alarm. This will help your kid to sleep deep.
