Crib to Bed: The Toddler Movement and Bed Safety

The majority of kids transition from a crib to a bed between the ages of two and three. Safety plays a huge role in the transition, if your child is climbing out of their crib or has outgrown it, you might consider shifting them to the toddler bed. A bed may be more practical if your child is in the process of potty training or is already trained and is able to get out of bed to use the toilet. Basically, the baby’s age, growth, and development mainly determine this transition.

Transitions can be hard, and are different from toddler to toddler, but here are a few ways you can have a smooth transition.

Introducing the Toddler bed-

If the toddler is made familiar and comfortable with the bed from the very first stage, which is choosing the bed and the bedding, they will be more excited and comfortable for the move.
Placing the bed in the room where the crib is and letting the toddler have playtime on it will make them feel safe and familiar with the new bed.

Familiarity with the Environment-

Replicating the sleeping environment of the crib with the bed is a hack you could try. This gives them a feeling of familiarity and helps them feel comfortable in the new bed. Bright colors or adding their favorite room decor make the environment more desirable to them. And sticking to a consistent sleeping routine will work in your favor. Have a nightlight or leave the hallway light on if that makes them more comfortable.

The pre-bedtime routine-

Giving your toddler a bath and then following it with a story or song will help them relax and calm down. Sometimes reading a story to them while laying with them in their bed might help them with their sense of security and make them more comfortable.

Rules!Rules!Rule!

Having bed rules stops your toddler from coming knocking at your door at midnight, but having said that, sometimes you bend them considering the circumstances. Be firm but considerate and understanding.

Patience is the key-

Children are naturally resistant to change, so be patient and consistent with the new schedule. If your child is having difficulty adjusting, gradually increase the amount of time they spend in the new bed until they are comfortable sleeping there all night.

If your child remains in bed all night, express your pride in order to encourage them to do so again. You have the choice of using prizes or other incentives to encourage them!

Best of luck with the transition!
